Actually motor and mag are the same- it's the Tangerine that's the difference. But a letter CAN make a lot of difference.

The 291-16 A is small Alnico motor large format can convert to 288C

16B is big Alnico motor, 16C is big Alnico and Tangerine, convert to 288g and H respectively

I was surprised to see "D-140" not realizing that later models used ribbed cones.

That said, it was as obvious to me that they were NOT 421's as it was that there's a 911 parked behind them.

Been a while since I did any, but the old Alnico JBL's used to freely take each others kits...ie D140 could be 2205, etc.

I suspect this is where polarity issues i've encountered in the past have come from. For example when a driver that observed the old convention where + signal applied to the black terminal moved the cone forward was re-coned with a newer kit made in accordance with the modern convention of + signal to the red terminal moves the cone forward.

Long story short, i learned to battery test every JBL when i acquired it.

What is a fair price for these then? The JBL woofers have to be worth about $250-300 alone. Then you have the 808s and 511 horns. Yes, they don't have original Altec woofers. How much more would they be worth if they had say 421 woofers in them? Just asking for because I'm curious.

IMO, any difference in value would be more sentiment driven than anything else. Of course we'd really need to see those D140's. Apparently the early gray frames that twist and cause voice coil misalignment if you overtighten the mounting screws are still sought after by a few folks. The ribbed cones suggest they're later black frame versions, but as OG mentions the recone parts were all interchangeable so they could be newer cones in older frames. One can never post too many pictures when selling.

JBL no longer offers factory support/cone kits for these heritage drivers. Not unlike the 421's, their lack of serviceability has taken a bite out of their value.
